Winter is almost over! We had one last opportunity to get out and do a spring skiing trip in the White Mountains, about 40 miles north of Fairbanks. Nathaniel Wilder (www.nathanielwilder.com) and Cameron Martindell (www.offyonder.com) invited me out for the 11 day, 108 mile adventure. We had a few rest days, 2 big mileage days with 19 and 24 mile pushes, and a few days with 12 mile segments. Overall the skiing was pretty easy and the landscapes were beautiful. The cabins were cozy and well stocked with wood. We had lots of good food – salmon, halibut, caribou burgers and sausage, and lots of frozen vegetables. The northern lights were visibile on 4 nights but one night in particular really stood out. It was one of the top displays I’ve seen but only lasted about 20 minutes before dying down.
